The islands of Grenada are situated on the southern end of the Windward Island chain of the Caribbean Islands about 100 miles north of Trinidad and Tobago and 150 miles off the coast of Venezuela. Visited by Columbus in 1498. It was the French that first endeavoured to colonise Greanda but found bitter resistance from the native Carib Indians, the Islands were eventually handed over to the British in 1783.

In 1877 Grenada became a Crown Colony, and in 1967 it became an associate state within the British Commonwealth before gaining independence in 1974. Times remained troubled until 1979 when there was a coup and an attempt to introduce communist rule but in 1983 the Eastern Caribbean States aided by The United States of America "invaded" the islands and restored democratic government.

Since that time Grenada has not really looked back and there has been a stable period that has allowed the islands to enjoy economic growth primarily from the export of spices and a booming tourist industry.
