Situated just 50 miles off the coasts of the United States and Cuba lie the Islands of the Bahamas, consisting of 23 permanently inhabited islands and many thousands of cays and islets. The islands became independent from the United Kingdom on the 10th July 1973, which is celebrated as the National Day. The Bahamas joined the Commonwealth in the same year.
The Islands are now governed from Nassau, as a sovereign state, with their own democratically elected parliament with HM Queen Elizabeth II as head of state of the Bahamas who appoints a Governor-General to act on her behalf.
